On April 11, 2023, following a search of his home, Ivanov was arrested and placed in Detention Center No. 1 in Noginsk. He was charged with three counts under Clause “d,” Part 2, Article 207.3 of the Russian Criminal Code, “Public dissemination of deliberately false information about the use of the Russian Armed Forces motivated by political hatred and hostility.” Ivanov was accused of three social media posts on VK and Telegram: one about the events in Bucha (a summary of a New York Times article titled “Satellite Images Show Bodies Lying in Bucha for Weeks, Despite Russian Claims”), one regarding a UN report containing information on war crimes by the Russian military, and another about a speech by Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, which mentioned missile strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.
Roman has been in custody for 1 year and 4 months. He is currently held at a detention center near Penal Colony No. 6 in Kolomna. Despite health challenges, including bronchial asthma and musculoskeletal issues caused by a car accident, as well as worsening vision, Roman endures imprisonment with resilience. His family—wife, mother, and daughter from a previous marriage—awaits his release.
Unfortunately, the events of the past year have had a severe impact on Roman’s family. His mother (born in 1945) has experienced worsening chronic conditions and frequent spikes in blood pressure due to emotional stress. Additionally, his daughter has been diagnosed with mixed anxiety-depressive disorder as a result of the psychological strain.
