The Kagarlitsky Network for Intellectual Freedom (KNIF), will seek to be an alliance of educators, researchers and others committed to defending the fundamental values of freedom of thought and investigation, primarily of those individuals and institutions involved in education and research.
Its initial focus will be the growing threat to intellectual freedom in the Russian Federation and those territories it occupies, exemplified by the repression of well-known figures such as sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky, mathematician Azat Miftakhov and other educators and researchers who have been jailed, labelled “foreign agents” or punished in other ways for daring to think differently. It will also strive to strengthen solidarity with those fighting for the fundamental value of intellectual freedom in all countries where this comes under threat.
In the case of the Russian Federation and those territories it occupies, the Kagarlitsky Network for Intellectual Freedom demands:
The release of all political prisoners, in particular those academics, intellectuals, researchers and educators being held in detention for holding ideas contrary to those of government authorities.
The repeal of all legislation that restricts freedom of thought and speech, particularly those targeting individuals and institutions in the field of research and education.
An end to the discrimination against and punishment of such individuals and institutions.
The Kagarlitsky Network for Intellectual Freedom will act to mobilise public opinion in support of these demands, and to provide solidarity and support to individuals and institutions involved in education and research that suffer discrimination and punishment due to the ideas and values they hold.
